The global spotlight is officially shifting to India this summer, as director Christopher Nolan and Hollywood superstars Matt Damon and Tom Holland prepare for a massive, high-profile visit to Mumbai for the official global premiere of The Odyssey. Dropping in ahead of the film’s highly anticipated worldwide theatrical release on July 17, the star-studded press tour is placing Mumbai right alongside London, Paris, and New York. While fans are eager to catch a glimpse of the cast, much of the online buzz has centered around the shocking physical condition of its leading man.
At 55 years old, Matt Damon has undergone a grueling, body-altering transformation to play the mythical Greek king of Ithaca, recently appearing in set photos looking completely
ripped, standing on a rocky shoreline in Italy with a long grey beard, popping abs, and a ragged cloth wrapped around his waist.
Getting into such punishing shape required an intentional strategy from the veteran actor, who completely shifted his mindset to treat his preparation like an elite athletic camp. When Matt Damon signed on to star in The Odyssey, the goal was simple. “The director wanted me lean but strong,” Damon said during an appearance on New Heights. Hitting that balance, Damon explained, required a tighter routine, a stricter diet, and a mindset shift that treated training like part of the job—not a side hustle.
The 167-Pound Timeline: Going Back To High School Weight
To achieve the precise, battle-hardened look of a stranded warrior king, Damon had to shed a massive amount of body weight. Appearing on the Jan. 7 episode of Jason and Travis Kelce’s New Heights podcast, the actor fielded compliments from the hosts, who said they’d seen the photos of him looking “pretty yoked up” while on set.
“Yeah, I was in really good shape,” he replied. “I lost a lot of weight. [Christopher Nolan, the director] said he wanted me, like, lean but strong. It’s a weird thing.”
Providing some insight into his weight loss, Matt said he stopped eating gluten at his doctor’s advice. He combined this with “a lot of training and a really strict diet,” and eventually wound up weighing less than he had since his teens.
“I used to walk around between 185 and 200 pounds. And I did that whole movie at 167 pounds,” he revealed. “I haven’t been that light since high school.”
And as for the current state of his diet, it sounds like the gluten-free lifestyle has stuck. “I’m done. I’m gluten-free everything,” he said. “I found a gluten-free beer. It’s been so long since I’ve had gluten, I can’t tell if it’s good or not. So that’s a good sign.”
While Damon’s exact daily training splits for The Odyssey haven’t been completely made public, his approach closely mirrors the specialised physical prep he utilised earlier in his career for the action-heavy Jason Bourne franchise. With the full trailer showcasing a shredded, battle-weary Odysseus battling the elements, the strict routine has clearly paid off.
