Agencies are examining all possible angles in the devastating fire at a luxury ski resort in Switzerland during New Year celebrations, which has killed 40 people so far, even as local police have ruled
out a “terror attack” angle, CNN-News18 has learnt.
While authorities have not specified the exact cause behind the blaze, intelligence agencies believe the incident should not be seen in isolation, given that the development comes just days after the Sydney Bondi Beach attack, prompting heightened scrutiny of violent incidents and lone-actor threats across Western countries.
Top intelligence sources indicated to CNN-News18 that the Switzerland incident cannot be viewed in isolation, particularly in the backdrop of the recent Bondi Beach attack in Sydney, which has brought renewed focus on lone-actor and ideologically inspired violence across Western countries.
In the Bondi Beach tragedy, Sajid Akram (50) and his son, 24-year-old Naveed Akram, opened fire on a crowd of nearly 1,000-2,000 attendees at a Jewish Hanukkah celebration, killing 16 people. Investigators believe the duo pledged allegiance to ISIS prior to the attack. The incident also led to a diplomatic row, with Australia’s prime minister Anthony Albanese rejecting accusations from his Israeli counterpart, Benjamin Netanyahu, that Australia’s recognition of a Palestinian state earlier this year had contributed to the deadly antisemitic terrorist attack.
Switzerland is regarded as a high-symbolic-value European target due to its role as a global diplomatic hub. The country hosts several international institutions and global diplomatic infrastructure, including United Nations bodies, despite its long-standing neutral stance.
Indian intelligence agencies are in close coordination with European counterparts to assess broader trends emerging after the Gaza war. Sources said a growing section of the global Muslim diaspora is being exposed to narratives framing the conflict as “collective punishment”, with such messaging increasingly directed at Western societies.
Investigators are tracing potential exposure to Palestine-linked extremist propaganda ecosystems, including encrypted and semi-open online platforms used to circulate emotionally charged visuals, sermons, and calls for action.
Swiss authorities have reiterated that no final conclusions have been drawn. Until the precise cause of the fire is established, officials maintain that accidental, criminal, and ideological explanations will all continue to be examined.
