Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday received a grand ceremonial welcome at Rashtrapati Bhavan. President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi greeted him at the forecourt, where a tri-services guard of honour was presented.
The warm reception came a day after the prime minister hosted Putin for a private dinner.
Following the ceremony, Putin visited Raj Ghat to pay homage to Mahatma Gandhi. The Russian leader arrived in New Delhi on Thursday evening, making his first trip to India in four years and his first since the start of the Ukraine war in 2022.

He was personally received at Palam airport by PM Modi, who welcomed him with a hug before the two leaders travelled together to the prime minister’s residence.
During their meeting earlier today, energy cooperation featured prominently in the talks, with Putin saying Russia was ready to continue “uninterrupted shipments” of fuel to India and describing Moscow as a reliable supplier of oil, gas and coal.
His remarks come amid strong US pressure on New Delhi to cut Russian oil imports. Washington has imposed steep tariffs on most Indian products, arguing that India’s purchases support Moscow’s war effort.
PM Modi thanked Putin for his “unwavering commitment towards India” and noted that energy security remains a key pillar of bilateral ties. India became a major buyer of Russian crude after the Ukraine conflict began, with Russia supplying nearly 36 percent of India’s oil imports in 2024. However, New Delhi has recently scaled back purchases under international pressure.
The two leaders also discussed the situation in Ukraine. Putin said he briefed PM Modi on developments and ongoing efforts involving several countries, including the United States, for a possible peaceful settlement. PM Modi reiterated that India continues to advocate peace and dialogue on the issue.
