'Why Would Anyone Want You To Be Successful?': Satya Nadella Explains Why People Lost Faith In AI

With artificial intelligence continuing to transform workplaces, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said people have lost faith in the AI industry due to persistent fears that the technology will replace human jobs.

“This is one of those situations where we have already lost people’s trust in the way we have talked about AI. People hear things like ‘All economic opportunities for knowledge workers are going to disappear’ or ‘my knowledge-based job is gone.’ Then, at the same time, they hear someone say, ‘I’m excited about building that technology’,” he said at a podcast.

“Why would anyone want you to be successful? I mean, I don’t want you to be successful. I mean, this just makes no social sense,” he added.

Nadella’s latest remarks point towards mounting

concerns that the rapid rise of AI in workplaces will replace several human jobs in the coming years. Several tech giants, including Google, Microsoft and Amazon, have already announced hundreds of layoffs as they ramp up AI investments and automate more functions.

Nadella, who runs one of the largest cloud providers and has invested billions of dollars in OpenAI, has not shied away from warning against AI’s impact on routine employment, urging companies to handle the technology with care to augment human capabilities rather than replace workers.

How Can People Trust AI?

Nadella underscored that people have stopped believing in AI due to concerns that it will take over their jobs. “When you have someone in a college commencement be booed because they’re saying AI, it means we have now crossed over to people who don’t believe us, and rightfully so,” he said.

However, the Microsoft CEO offered a suggestion on how to restore public trust in AI. “If you’re building a data centre, let’s make sure that that community believes that this data centre is great for them. It’s for their tax base, for their community efforts, their real estate value, their schools, their water use, their electricity prices,” he said.

He further said AI should be used to identify and create new jobs, while also helping determine fair wages.
