Director Shoojit Sircar—known for his sensitive storytelling in films like October and Sardar Udham—has also delivered some of Indian cinema’s most loved comedies, including Vicky Donor and Piku. Now, after several years, Sircar is gearing up to revisit comedy, but with an unexpected twist: a mythological comedy headlined by powerhouse performers Manoj Bajpayee and Rajkummar Rao.
Shoojit Sircar Returns to Comedy With a Mythological Twist
A source confirmed to Pinkvilla that Sircar is preparing one of his most experimental projects yet. “Director Shoojit Sircar is returning to comedy after a few years, and this time with a new sub-genre. The filmmaker is attempting to explore a fresh facet of humor in cinema, one that is rarely explored in Indian
films. The film will begin shooting in 2026 and will be one of the most unconventional projects made in Indian cinema,” the insider revealed.
The director is reportedly set to reinterpret an important chapter of the Mahabharata through a comedic lens—an approach almost unheard of in mainstream Indian cinema. Blending eccentric humour with contemporary beats while staying rooted in mythological storytelling, the film aims to reimagine the epic in a way that feels clever, sharp, and culturally refreshing.
Manoj Bajpayee & Rajkummar Rao to Lead the Film
Bringing together two of India’s most acclaimed performers, the film pairs Manoj Bajpayee and Rajkummar Rao—actors celebrated for their versatility, timing, and ability to elevate any script. Both stars have had a powerful year with standout projects and continue to be among the most sought-after performers in the industry.
Shoojit Sircar’s Last Project
Sircar’s most recent directorial outing was I Want to Talk, starring Abhishek Bachchan. The moving drama, inspired by the real-life story of Arjun Sen, follows a cancer survivor preparing for a life-changing surgery while struggling to repair a strained relationship with his daughter. The ensemble also featured Ahilya Bamroo, Johny Lever, Pearl Dey, Jayant Kripalani and Kristin Goddard.
What’s Next for the Lead Actors
Manoj Bajpayee was recently seen reprising his fan-favourite role as Srikant Tiwari in The Family Man Season 3, directed by Raj & DK. The new season sees the iconic spy grappling with a fresh national threat that dangerously intersects with his personal life.
Rajkummar Rao was last seen in a leading role in Maalik, followed by a cameo in Aryan Khan’s directorial debut The Ba***ds of Bollywood.
