A 34-year-old mechanic in Bengaluru died after he and his wife were forced to travel from one hospital to another on a motorcycle in search of urgent medical care, only to face alleged indifference from hospitals
and bystanders alike.
Venkataramanan, who worked at a garage, developed severe chest pain around 3.30 am at his home in Balaji Nagar in south Bengaluru. Officials said he had previously suffered a minor heart attack, and his condition deteriorated rapidly, leaving him extremely weak and unwell.
With no immediate medical help available, his wife set out with him on a two-wheeler, riding the motorcycle herself. Their first stop was a nearby private hospital, where they were allegedly told that no doctor was available. They then went to another private facility, where an ECG reportedly confirmed a mild heart attack.
According to the family, the hospital neither initiated emergency treatment nor arranged an ambulance. Instead, they were advised to shift him to the Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences in Jayanagar.
While travelling there on the motorcycle, the couple met with an accident. CCTV footage from the area shows Venkataramanan lying on the road in pain as his wife desperately pleaded with passing motorists for help, folding her hands before cars, a tempo and a motorcycle. None stopped. She is seen repeatedly returning to her husband after being turned away, as vehicles continued to pass by.
After several agonising minutes, a cab driver finally stopped and helped take Venkataramanan to a nearby hospital. Doctors there declared him dead on arrival.
Venkataramanan had married in January 2020 and is survived by his five-year-old son and an 18-month-old daughter. He was also the only surviving child of his mother, who had already lost her other five children over the years.
Amid the tragedy, the family chose to give life to others by donating Venkataramanan’s eyes, allowing his death to restore sight to those in need.
