Travelling to a new country can bring exciting experiences, but it can also leave visitors feeling disappointed. A Canadian traveller recently shared his thoughts about visiting Delhi, saying the experience left him tired and frustrated because of repeated scams and dishonest behaviour.
His comments have started a debate online, with some people agreeing with his experience while others feel he should not judge the whole country based on one city. Many users also suggested other parts of India that they believe offer a very different experience.
Traveller Says Delhi Experience Left Him Exhausted
The man, identified as Steve, posted the video on his family travel Instagram account called @jetlagwarriors. In the clip, he explained why his trip to
Delhi made him unsure about returning to India.
“Now, I’m not the type of person to go to a city and then say, ‘Well, I’ll never go back to that country,’ but my experience in Delhi, India, was as close as I’ve ever gotten to having that feeling cross my head and it’s because of the incessant lying,” he said.
Steve claimed that he regularly came across people trying to cheat him. “Every day, just people trying to scam me, and literally on a daily basis, I would catch people lying, and their reaction was always the same: they would smile and they would say, ‘Yeah, I was lying to you.’ No guilt, no remorse, not even an indication that dishonesty is a bad behaviour.”
He also spoke about spending money during the trip. “It’s like every time I reached for my wallet, I was getting scammed. In Delhi, India, looking someone in the eye and telling them something you know to be untrue is part of the negotiation process. It’s a cultural norm, and it is so tiresome,” he added.
He Says He Still Wants To Give India Another Chance
Even after his difficult experience, Steve said he is willing to visit India again. He explained that his wife believes South India is very different from North India.
“And so, as you can probably guess, my wife is a little bit more excited for this trip than I am. My wife has been on this idea that South India is far different than North India for a few years now, but seeing Russell Peters on Netflix kind of changed my mind and convinced me to give India another shot. So, now we will go to Mumbai,” he said.
The caption of the clip read, “My Delhi India experience was tough with constant scams and lies. It’s a cultural norm to be dishonest. Hoping Mumbai offers a different vibe.”

Users Online Share Mixed Reactions
Many people reacted to Steve’s comments. Some agreed that Delhi can be difficult for tourists. “Delhi can be overwhelming, especially for first-time visitors,” a user wrote.
Another commented, “Tourists should always research local scams before travelling anywhere.”
Some users felt bad about the experience. “This is sad because India has so much more to offer,” a comment read. Another added, “Mumbai will hopefully give him a better experience.”
Others pointed out that scams are common even for locals. “This happened to me as an Indian. Constant scamming,” a person said.
Several users also suggested other places in India. “Please come to real India….it’s down south, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka….The north is always like this,” a comment read. Another user wrote, “We Indians ourselves don’t like Delhi, it’s horrible. Go to the North East, it’s beautiful, along with its people. South India is good, Goa is lovely.”
