Bengaluru: A tragic road accident claimed the life of a 20-year-old woman from Manipur after a Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) bus ran over her near the busy Tin Factory junction on Friday morning.
The victim, identified as Hanna Inaka, was riding pillion on a scooter when the incident occurred around 9:30 am. The scooter was being driven by her friend, Srikun Saba Inka, who survived with minor injuries.
According to the police, the two-wheeler was heading towards K R Puram when a BMTC bus, travelling from Silk Board towards Tin Factory, brushed against the scooter near the K R Puram railway station. The impact caused the riders to lose control and fall onto the road.
While the rider managed to escape with injuries, Hanna reportedly
fell directly into the path of the bus. She was run over by the vehicle and died on the spot. Hanna Inaka, a native of Manipur, had been living in Bengaluru for work and was employed as a spa worker. Her sudden death has left the local community shaken.
The incident, which came to public attention on Saturday after CCTV footage surfaced online, has triggered widespread outrage on social media. The video reportedly shows the bus hitting the scooter from behind, causing the woman to fall and come under both the front and rear wheels of the bus. Many have criticised what they allege to be rash and negligent driving by the government-run bus driver.
The Mahadevapura Traffic Police have arrested the BMTC bus driver and registered a case of death due to negligence. Officials said a detailed investigation is underway and all aspects of the incident, including the video footage, are being examined.
This is not an isolated case. In January, a 28-year-old man from Tamil Nadu was killed after being run over by a BMTC bus near Electronics City. In that case, preliminary investigations suggested that the victim lost balance on his two-wheeler before being crushed by the bus.
The recurring accidents involving public transport buses have once again raised serious concerns over road safety and driving practices in Bengaluru, especially on congested city roads.
