Dr Ahmed Mohiyuddin Saiyed, the prime accused in the alleged Ricin terror conspiracy under investigation by the Gujarat Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS), suffered injuries during a clash inside Ahmedabad’s Sabarmati
Central Jail on Tuesday.
The incident occurred less than 12 hours after Saiyed and two other suspects were shifted to the high-security prison under judicial custody.
According to Prison Superintendent Gaurav Agrawal, the scuffle broke out around 7 am in the high-security enclosure where the three terror-accused inmates were lodged.
The altercation reportedly involved three local undertrial prisoners placed in the same section.
The reasons behind the confrontation remain unclear.
Saiyed, also known as Jilani, sustained injuries in the fight and was taken to Ahmedabad Civil Hospital for examination before being brought back to the jail.
His condition was reported to be stable, and he was not in danger.
The prison administration has informed the local police, and an FIR into the incident is expected to be registered soon.
Saiyed, an MBBS doctor originally from Hyderabad, was arrested on November 8 along with Azad Suleman Sheikh and Mohammad Suhail Mohammad Saleem.
The ATS has accused him of attempting to derive the highly toxic chemical agent Ricin from castor beans to carry out what investigators described as a “major terror attack” in India.
The agency claims Saiyed had begun the process of procuring equipment and raw materials, including castor oil, and had initiated the early stages of chemical processing.
During searches at Saiyed’s Hyderabad residence earlier this week, ATS officials recovered an unidentified chemical and raw materials, which were sent for forensic testing.
Similar raids were conducted at the homes of the other two arrested men in Uttar Pradesh, though investigators said no incriminating items were found there.
Officials also stated that, so far, no link has been established between Saiyed and the doctors arrested in connection with the recent car blast in Delhi.
The ATS had earlier claimed that two Glock pistols, a Beretta pistol, 30 live cartridges and four litres of castor oil were recovered from Saiyed.
Investigators allege that his handler, identified as Abu Khadija, an Afghanistan-based operative linked to the Islamic State Khorasan Province, had guided him, and that Saiyed had also been in touch with individuals in Pakistan.
The other two accused men allegedly procured weapons from Hanumangadh in Rajasthan and supplied them to Saiyed, according to the investigation agency.
All three men were booked under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita and the Arms Act.
Following the completion of their police remand, they were transferred to Sabarmati Central Prison, where Tuesday’s clash took place.
