Kobbie Mainoo is reportedly taking Spanish lessons as speculation grows around a potential swap deal involving a Real Madrid star. The young midfielder has struggled for game time at Manchester United
this season, making just three appearances off the bench in the league so far.
His only start came in the penalty shootout defeat to Grimsby in the EFL Cup in August.
Despite showing promise in that game, Mainoo has not convinced manager Ruben Amorim that he deserves a regular place in the team. With summer transfer talk suggesting a possible loan move away from Old Trafford, especially after his friend Alejandro Garnacho’s exit to Chelsea, Mainoo’s future at the club remains uncertain.
Over the past two years, he has been learning Spanish, following in the footsteps of teammates Garnacho and Amad Diallo, who are already fluent.
Mainoo Could Be Part Of A Swap
Reports indicate that Manchester United may explore a swap deal with Real Madrid for midfielder Federico Valverde. United have been actively looking for a midfield addition, with other targets including Brighton’s Carlos Baleba and Real Madrid’s Eduardo Camavinga.
While Camavinga is reportedly a more realistic option, the club is said to be willing to offer £44 million plus Mainoo for Valverde.
Valverde, who joined Real Madrid from Penarol in 2016, has become a versatile asset for the Spanish side, capable of playing in central midfield, on the right flank, or at right-back.
United’s interest highlights the need to strengthen their midfield options, but any deal involving Valverde would be a major move, given his long-term role at Los Blancos.
Game Time Is Key For England
For Kobbie Mainoo, securing regular minutes is crucial, not just for his club career but also for his international prospects.
Currently behind Bruno Fernandes, Casemiro, and Manuel Ugarte in United’s midfield pecking order, Mainoo faces a tough challenge. Casemiro will miss the upcoming game against Brentford, but Mainoo still has limited opportunities to impress Amorim.
With the England World Cup squad in mind, Mainoo must compete with players like Declan Rice, Adam Wharton, Conor Gallagher, and emerging talent Elliot Anderson.
The 20-year-old has not featured for the Three Lions since their 2-1 loss to Greece last October, making consistent playing time even more vital if he hopes to secure a spot for next year’s tournament in the U.S.
