Bengaluru, June 9 (PTI) Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara on Tuesday directed officials to formulate special programmes to encourage rural youth and promote traditional sports across the state.
Reviewing the progress of the Youth Empowerment and Sports Department and the Hindu Religious Endowment Department at Vidhana Soudha, here, Parameshwara stressed the need for effective implementation of government schemes and greater support for talented athletes from rural areas, a statement issued by his office said.
“There are many talented sportspersons in rural areas. If they are provided with proper training, financial assistance and competitive opportunities, they can excel at the national and international levels,” he said.
He also called
for special initiatives to preserve and promote Karnataka’s traditional sports.
Discussing sports awards instituted by the government, Parameshwara said eligible athletes should be identified transparently and honoured without delay.
“Sports awards due to achievers should not remain pending under any circumstances. Recognising their accomplishments will inspire other young athletes as well,” he said.
It was the government’s responsibility to encourage athletes who have brought laurels to the state in events such as Olympics, Asian Games and Commonwealth Games by providing them employment opportunities in various government departments.
Parameshwara also reviewed administrative matters relating to the Religious Endowment Department and directed officials to improve temple management, devotee facilities and overall departmental efficiency.
He instructed the department to expedite the recruitment process for 235 vacant posts and ensure timely implementation of all schemes and programmes. PTI GMS SA
