Maharashtra May Get India’s First Space Park: ₹150-Crore Investment May Generate ₹1,000-Crore Revenue

Maharashtra is planning to set up India’s first Space Park in coastal Ratnagiri, with Machal and Matheran being explored as possible locations for the project. Industries Minister Uday Samant said the proposed ₹150-crore initiative could generate nearly ₹1,000 crore in revenue, while creating a new manufacturing and investment ecosystem around the space sector. The proposed park will focus primarily on satellite manufacturing, with the state also looking to attract global companies and technology firms to Maharashtra. The government hopes the project will bring fresh investment, create jobs and give local industries an entry point into the expanding space economy. on Maharashtra’s industrial and space sectors were held during his recent visit to Paris. The Paris visit also provided an opportunity to explore greater industrial and technology cooperation between India and France. The state is now looking to build on these discussions by bringing international companies into Maharashtra’s emerging technology ecosystem. Within Maharashtra, Ratnagiri is being considered for the proposed Space Park, with Matheran and Machaal among the locations under examination. The final site, however, has not yet been decided and the proposal remains at the planning stage. The government is also preparing to hold a Space Festival in February, with plans to bring global-level companies and industry stakeholders onto a common platform. The event is expected to be used to showcase investment opportunities and explore partnerships in the space and satellite manufacturing sectors. The initiative comes at a time when space-related manufacturing and private-sector participation are expanding in India. Maharashtra, with its established industrial base and access to technology and investment networks, is seeking to position itself as a destination for this new wave of businesses. For the state government, the proposed Space Park is therefore not just about setting up another industrial facility. The larger objective is to develop an ecosystem covering satellite manufacturing, technology, investment and employment, while bringing global companies into the state. The proposal is still at an early stage, with the location, investment structure and participating companies yet to be finalised. But if the government can convert the ₹150-crore proposal into actual investment and manufacturing capacity, Ratnagiri could become the starting point for Maharashtra’s push into the space economy — turning an ambitious announcement into a new industrial sector for the state.
