Why West Indies Will Have To Go Through Qualifying Tournament To Play In 2027 ODI World Cup

Two-time champions West Indies will once again have to go through a qualifying tournament to secure their place at the 2027 ODI World Cup after Afghanistan’s victory over Ireland on Monday ended their hopes of automatic qualification. The 2027 World Cup will be co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia, with the deadline for automatic qualification set for September 30.

Automatic qualification will go to the top eight teams in the ICC ODI Rankings as of September 30, with the two host nations, South Africa and Zimbabwe, excluded from the calculation. Afghanistan have punched their ticket after beating Ireland in the second ODI to ensure a top-eight finish in the rankings.

Australia, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, England, Bangladesh,

South Africa and Afghanistan are the confirmed participants.

West Indies, currently 10th in the ICC ODI rankings, will now have to negotiate another challenging qualifying campaign. This marks the third consecutive time the Caribbean side will need to come through a qualifying event to earn a place at an ODI World Cup.

Qualifiers In February

The 2027 World Cup Qualifier is scheduled to take place in February next year, although the host is yet to be decided. The team that wins the Qualifier will earn direct entry into the second round of the 2027 World Cup. The teams finishing second, third, and fourth, meanwhile, will have to compete in the first round, known as the Super Series.

The winner of that tri-series will then advance to the second round of the World Cup. The revamped qualification system, however, has not been well received by some Associate nations.

Eight Teams In Qualifier

The Qualifier will feature Ireland and West Indies, the two lowest-ranked non-host Full Members in the ODI rankings as of 30 September 2026. They will be joined by the top four teams from Cricket World Cup League 2.

The remaining four places will come through the World Cup Qualifier Playoff. The eight-team playoff will feature the four lowest-placed teams from CWC League 2 along with four sides from the Challenge League, which is essentially cricket’s third division. The four highest-ranked teams in the playoff will earn promotion to the World Cup Qualifier.

The Challenge League consists of 12 teams split into two pools of six. Across the cycle, each pool will stage three round-robin tournaments. The two highest-placed teams from each pool will then advance to the World Cup Qualifier Playoff.
