Ace Indian batter Virat Kohli was at his very best on the field before smacking his 80th ODI fifty, as he took a brilliant low catch in the slips to dismiss New Zealand’s Nathan Smith in the first ODI and followed it up with a special bow-and-arrow celebration.
Smith’s dismissal came in the 29th over, with pacer Anshul Kamboj providing the breakthrough. Looking to steady the innings after captain Mitchell Santner’s departure, Smith poked at a probing good-length ball angled across him outside the off stump.
The ball found the outside edge and flew low to the right of slip.
Kohli, positioned in the cordon, displayed lightning-fast reflexes, diving full length to his right and plucking the ball inches above the ground with an outstretched hand. As
soon as he completed the catch, Kohli sprang to his feet and sprinted across the infield, pumping his fists in celebration as teammates rushed towards him.

Smith departed for just one off nine balls, leaving New Zealand reeling at 115/7. The wicket capped an incisive and disciplined spell from Kamboj, further compounding the hosts’ middle-order collapse after India elected to bowl first in chilly Auckland conditions.
Meanwhile, India’s young pace attack, led by the towering Gurnoor Brar, troubled New Zealand with steep bounce before Kohli marked his 38th birthday eve with a commanding 74, guiding India to a comfortable five-wicket win.
The 6ft 5in Gurnoor justified skipper Shubman Gill’s faith, unsettling the home batters with his pace and steep bounce while finding able support in Arshdeep Singh as India bowled out New Zealand for a below-par 185 in 40.2 overs.
