What initially appeared to be a perplexing murder with misleading leads was swiftly cracked after police dog Simbha redirected investigators away from false assumptions, pointing them directly toward the actual killer at a bus stand in Srirangapatna, Karnataka.
The victim, a young carpenter named Rakesh from KR Pet, was found bludgeoned to death near the KRS bus stand. With his abandoned motorcycle lying nearby and phone records showing he had been speaking to his girlfriend for over an hour just before his death, investigators initially suspected an honour killing orchestrated by the woman’s family.
A Scent Trail Revealed
The direction of the investigation changed dramatically when Simbha, a trained police sniffer dog, was brought to the crime scene alongside forensic
officers. After sniffing the victim’s body, Simbha moved directly to Rakesh’s motorcycle and began barking repeatedly.
Rather than leading officers towards a distant escape route, the canine tracked a distinct scent trail along the main road, pausing near several local shops before stopping. The behaviour suggested that the perpetrator had spent time in close proximity to the victim before the attack and had walked to nearby shops immediately afterwards, ruling out an ambush by outside relatives.
From False Lead to Confession
Guided by Simbha’s precise scent tracking, investigators reconstructed Rakesh’s final hours and discovered he had spent the evening drinking in Mysuru with his assistant, Ambarish, who had vanished shortly after the murder occurred.
A targeted search was launched, and officers intercepted Ambarish near Akkihebbal village while he was attempting to flee across the state border on a bus heading towards Tamil Nadu. When the suspect was brought into the police station, Simbha immediately barked at him, corroborating the physical evidence.
Detectives noted bloodstains on Ambarish’s trousers and slippers, which forensic analysis later confirmed matched the victim’s blood.
An Alcohol-Fuelled Dispute
During interrogation, Ambarish confessed to the crime. He revealed that while drinking together, an argument broke out when Rakesh, engrossed in a lengthy phone conversation with his girlfriend, repeatedly refused to hand over money for dinner.
Enraged by the refusal, Ambarish fatally struck Rakesh with a heavy object. He then walked to nearby shops to buy snacks—unknowingly leaving the critical scent trail that Simbha would later follow—before attempting his escape.
