A post shared on X has gone viral after claiming that an Indian woman accused of shoplifting during a trip to Japan was not arrested and was instead let off with a warning out of “respect for India”.
The post, shared on Saturday by user Muthukrishnan Dhandapani, who said he was part of the same tour group, narrated an alleged incident involving a woman who was reportedly caught stealing at a souvenir shop during the visit.
According to the post, the woman had allegedly been shoplifting from the beginning of the trip without the knowledge of others in the group. She was eventually caught at a tourist shop and immediately offered to pay for the items.
In our group, from the beginning one lady has been shoplifting. We were not aware of it. In one of the tourist

The user claimed that the shopkeeper rejected the offer, saying Japan is a “high trust society” where theft is rare, and added that what offended him more was the attempt to pay after being caught. The shopkeeper then reportedly informed the police.
The post further stated that the tour manager accompanied the woman to the police station, where she again allegedly offered money. However, the police were said to be unimpressed and explained the seriousness of theft and its legal consequences, including possible jail time.
Despite this, the post claimed that the woman was not arrested and was instead released after receiving a severe warning, with the claim that Japanese authorities acted out of “respect for India”.
“They explained how severe the punishment is for stealing and said she needs to go to jail. But she being an Indian and they respect India a lot, she was let go with severe warning,” the user wrote.
Internet Reacts
The post quickly gained traction online, sparking strong reactions from users. Some criticised the alleged behaviour, calling for stricter punishment, while others expressed disappointment over the claims made in the final outcome of the incident.
“This is the issue, I am so disappointed when I read the last line. These pests can be weeded out when they are prosecuted and made an example. Even in india people break laws because it’s easy to cry and fall on feet and getaway with the punishment,” a comment read.
Another user remarked, “Such women should be permanently banned from all visas in any parts of the world as they bring India’s reputation down in the global world. No more mercy to be shown to them. Such a shame for country.”
Meanwhile, a few users also urged restraint, suggesting the matter could be linked to personal or psychological issues.
There has been no official confirmation from Japanese authorities regarding the incident, and the claims remain based on a social media post circulating online.
“She needs care and help. It’s a psychological problem. you should be supportive rather than posting on social media for some likes.. Indians are too judgemental very soon,” a user wrote.
