Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday conducted an on-site inspection of the under-construction National Centre for Aging at Banaras Hindu University (BHU), a dedicated healthcare facility for senior citizens that is nearing completion.
The seven-storey, 200-bed facility is being developed at an estimated cost of around Rs 150 crore within the Institute of Medical Sciences campus of BHU. During his visit, the Chief Minister reviewed the progress of construction and directed officials to complete the remaining work on a mission mode while ensuring the highest quality standards.
Yogi emphasized that there should be no compromise on quality and instructed the executing agency and BHU administration to regularly monitor the project
to ensure timely completion.
Third Such Facility in India
Once operational, the National Centre for Aging will become only the third such facility in the country and one of the largest geriatric healthcare centres in North India. The project is being designed exclusively to cater to the healthcare needs of senior citizens.
The centre will feature a multi-specialty geriatric outpatient department (OPD) and provide specialised treatment for age-related illnesses through facilities such as a Memory Clinic and an Arthritis Clinic.
Advanced Healthcare Facilities
According to officials, the centre will house modular operation theatres, advanced radiology and diagnostic services, rehabilitation facilities, a day-care centre, intensive care units (ICUs) and private wards.
The facility is expected to provide comprehensive healthcare services for elderly patients under one roof, reducing the need for referrals to multiple departments.
Hub for Geriatric Research and Training
Apart from clinical services, the National Centre for Aging will also function as a major academic and research institution in the field of geriatric medicine.
Doctors and nurses will receive specialised training in elderly care through the Department of Geriatric Medicine. The project also includes plans to expand postgraduate seats in MD Geriatric Medicine and increase faculty and senior resident positions.
The centre will undertake research on age-related diseases, develop treatment protocols and formulate specialised medical guidelines for senior citizens.
Boost for Healthcare in Purvanchal
Officials said the facility is expected to benefit lakhs of elderly patients from eastern Uttar Pradesh and neighbouring states by providing access to modern and specialised healthcare services closer to home.
The project forms part of the Uttar Pradesh government’s broader efforts to strengthen healthcare infrastructure and expand specialised medical services in the state.
Once completed, the National Centre for Aging is expected to emerge as a key centre for geriatric healthcare, research and training in North India.
