Star England opener Ben Duckett on Sunday, July 19, scored a 135-ball 141 to put his team in the driving position in the third and deciding ODI against India, as he went past West Indies legend Viv Richards to put up the highest individual ODI score at Lord’s.
England scored 82 runs in the last five overs as Joe Root and Jos Buttler followed Duckett and Jacob Bethell to demolish India’s wayward attack.
England posted the highest ODI total at Lord’s, going past the 334/4 they scored against India in 60 overs on the opening day of the inaugural 1975 World Cup.
Highest individual scores at Lord’s (ODI)
141 Ben Duckett vs Ind 2026
138* Viv Richards vs Eng 1979 (World Cup final)
137 Denis Amiss vs Ind 1975
137 Marcus Trescothick vs Pak 2001
136 Graham Gooch
vs Aus 1989
And it was also England’s highest at this level against India, topping the 366/8 they posted at Cuttack in 2017.
Duckett and Bethell etched their names into the record books with a 192-run opening stand as well, eclipsing the 186-run partnership between Eoin Morgan and Joe Root at Headingley in 2018 to become England’s highest stand for any wicket in an ODI against India.
Root’s 74* was his sixth consecutive ODI half-century.
It was also the former England skipper’s third unbeaten fifty of the three-match series, after his 76* in India’s six-wicket victory in Birmingham and 99* in England’s four-wicket win in Cardiff.
Buttler, meanwhile, faced just 13 deliveries in his 41*.
India, the top-ranked ODI team in the world, were missing the services of premier pacer Jasprit Bumrah because of a knee injury, while all-rounder Washington Sundar was ruled out with a hamstring problem.
India’s reshuffled bowling attack, featuring four pacers and spinner Axar Patel, struggled to find consistency after England captain Harry Brook opted to bat first. Gurnoor Brar (0/97 in 10 overs), Prince Yadav (1/79) and Arshdeep Singh (0/72) were all taken for plenty of runs as the bowlers struggled with their lines and lengths.
