The “Midwest Princess” is taking a firm stand on industry ethics. On Monday, Feb. 9, Grammy winner Chappell Roan officially announced she has dropped Wasserman, the powerhouse sports and entertainment agency, following the controversial emergence of CEO Casey Wasserman’s name in the latest unsealed Jeffrey Epstein documents.
In a pointed series of Instagram Stories, Roan made it clear that her professional representation must align with her personal ethics. “No artist, agent or employee should be expected to defend or overlook actions that conflict so deeply with our own moral values,” she stated. The singer-songwriter emphasized that while she appreciates the hard work of individual agents, the leadership at the top left her with no choice but
to exit. “Artists deserve representation that aligns with their values,” she added, noting that her departure “reflects my belief that meaningful change in our industry requires accountability and leadership that earns trust.”
The Epstein File Fallout and Artist Exodus
The controversy began when documents revealed 2003 email exchanges between Casey Wasserman and Ghislaine Maxwell, which were described as sexually suggestive. Wasserman addressed the situation on Jan. 31, admitting to being part of a 2002 Clinton Foundation delegation that traveled on Epstein’s plane but denied any personal or business relationship with the financier. “I am terribly sorry for having any association with either of them,” Wasserman said in a statement.
Despite his apology, an exodus has begun. The band Wednesday announced their departure in January, stating they were “aghast” to learn of the communications. They added: “We find Casey’s attempts to deflect and dismiss this situation deeply troubling.” Similarly, Beach Bunny labeled the revelations “abhorrent and disturbing on every level,” while Best Coast’s Bethany Cosentino published an open letter demanding Wasserman’s resignation, calling his position “inexcusable.”
Political Pressure on LA28 Leadership
The backlash has extended far beyond the music world. As the chairman of the LA28 Olympics committee, Wasserman is facing calls from high-ranking California officials to step down. Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn told the Los Angeles Times that Wasserman’s continued presence is a liability. “Having him represent us on the world stage distracts focus from our athletes and the enormous effort needed to prepare for 2028,” Hahn stated.
With Chappell Roan being one of the most influential new voices in pop, her departure signals a potential tipping point for the agency, which still represents massive stars like Adam Sandler and Katie Ledecky. For Roan, the move is a definitive statement: “I refuse to stand by.”
