Ishan Kishan-led East Zone will be desperate to break the team’s 13-year-long jinx when they take on Tilak Varma’s South Zone in the Duleep Trophy final in Chennai from Sunday, September 6.
South Zone will be boosted by Devdutt Padikkal’s entry. He made the most of his fortuitous call-up to the Indian team for the recent Test series against Sri Lanka, earning his place after Sai Sudharsan’s injury.
Padikkal returned home with two hundreds in as many Tests and a Player of the Series award to his name.
Padikkal will now hope to replicate that performance for South Zone in the Duleep Trophy final. A strong showing could help his team reclaim the title for the first time since 2023, while further strengthening his case for a longer run at No. 3 for India.
Neither Vaibhav Sooryavanshi nor Tilak features in India’s current red-ball plans. But Tilak, India’s T20I vice-captain, strengthened his case for an opportunity in the traditional format by scoring an unbeaten hundred and a fifty in the semifinal against North Zone in Bengaluru.
It also prompted Tilak, who leads South Zone, to express his desire to don the India whites.
East Zone’s Sooryavanshi scored 92 and 40 in the semifinal against Central Zone, showing that his game offers more than just the ability to clear the ropes at will in white-ball cricket.
