India’s interim head coach VVS Laxman has said that Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s maturity level, understanding and awareness have increased manifold over the last six months, adding that it’s impressive how he has kept scoring runs around the world at just 15 years of age.
Sooryavanshi answered his critics in style, ending a memorable tour by claiming both Player of the Match and Player of the Series honours as India sealed a 3-0 T20I sweep over Zimbabwe with a 35-run win in the final match on Sunday, July 26.
Sooryavanshi played a brilliant 81-run knock that helped India post a big total which was beyond Zimbabwe to chase down.
“What is really impressive is the way he has evolved as a person. The maturity level, the understanding and the awareness over
the last six months have actually skyrocketed,” Laxman said at the post-match press conference.
“And that is why he has been able to handle tough situations,” the former Indian cricketer added.
This came after Sooryavanshi endured a disappointing debut series against England, where he managed scores of 13, 14 and 15 before being dropped for the fifth and final T20I as India suffered a 0-4 series loss.
“He played the U19 World Cup and in a matter of four to five months, he dominated the IPL. We know how tough IPL competition can be. Taking on the best of bowlers from not only India but around the world, the way he evolved, the way he progressed as an international cricketer and he showed what kind of potential and class and talent he has,” Laxman said.
“We have to also remember that he is just 15 years old. He is a very young boy. And he himself wants to get better in every aspect of the game. And if you see it, even today’s game, he was taking the hot spot,” Laxman added.
