With the Mumbai mayor lottery, which decided the reservation for the civic bodies’ top post, held on Thursday, the process of selecting the mayor and deputy mayor has gained momentum.
The most talked about the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) mayor will be a woman from the general category.
On the same lines, women will also get the opportunity to become mayors in major municipal corporations of Pune, Nagpur and Nashik this year.
When will Mumbai mayoral election be held?
The election of Mayor and Deputy Mayor in BMC will be held on January 30 or 31. The final decision will be taken by the Municipal Secretary of the Municipal Corporation.

Like Mumbai, the Mayor and Deputy
Mayor will be elected on the same day in the remaining 28 Municipal Corporations. However, the Divisional Commissioners concerned will have the authority to fix the date and time of the election in those Municipal Corporations.
The selection process
In the first stage of the selection process, aspiring corporators from all 29 municipal corporations will submit their candidatures to the municipal secretary between January 27 and 28. After the scrutiny of applications, the actual election for the post of Mayor and Deputy Mayor will be held on January 30 or 31. This selection process will be held in the first general meeting of the newly elected corporators.
What is the schedule?
January 23: The Municipal Secretary will submit a proposal to the Divisional Commissioner to fix the date and time for convening a meeting of the elected members to hold elections for the posts of Mayor and Deputy Mayor.
January 24, 25: Divisional Commissioner to decide the date and presiding officer for first meeting of Municipal Corporation

January 27, 28: Nomination letters of interested members for the post of Mayor and Deputy Mayor will be submitted to the Municipal Secretary.
January 30, 31: The Mayor and Deputy Mayor will be elected by holding a meeting of newly elected members for the post of Mayor and Deputy Mayor.
