Suriya’s Karuppu has crossed the ₹100 crore mark in India within five days of release. The film continued its strong box office run on Tuesday despite a slight dip in collections after its massive weekend performance.
The film is being widely discussed because of its strong response in theatres, especially during scenes where Suriya transforms into Karuppusamy. Fans have been sharing videos and reactions online, with some viewers even seen going into a trance-like state during key sequences.
According to Sacnilk, Karuppu earned Rs 11.42 crore on day five. While Tuesday numbers were lower than Monday’s Rs 14.30 crore, the film still maintained solid momentum at the box office. The Trisha Krishnan and Suriya starrer had opened with Rs 15.50 crore on day one
before showing major growth on Saturday with Rs 24.15 crore. Sunday turned out to be the film’s biggest day so far as it collected Rs 28.35 crore. With the latest figures, Karuppu’s total India gross collection now stands at Rs 108.77 crore, while the India net collection has reached Rs 93.72 crore.
Tamil Version Leads The Box Office Run
Karuppu has performed much better in Tamil compared to its dubbed Telugu release. On its fifth day, the film collected Rs 9.62 crore from Tamil shows, while Telugu shows contributed Rs 1.80 crore. The film has already moved past the lifetime collections of several recent Suriya releases. Etharkkum Thunindhavan, released in 2022, had collected Rs 49.10 crore net in India during its full theatrical run. Kanguva earned Rs 70.37 crore, while Retro finished with Rs 60.58 crore in lifetime India net collections.
Karuppu has comfortably crossed all three totals within its first week itself, making it one of the actor’s strongest performers in recent years.
Karuppu Lands In Controversy
Even as the film continues its successful theatrical run, Karuppu recently found itself in controversy over a scene referencing legendary composer Ilaiyaraaja and his long-running copyright disputes.
The backlash online pushed the makers to issue a public apology on Tuesday. The production banner confirmed that the controversial portion would either be removed or modified in future screenings.
The statement read, “Dream Warrior Pictures wishes to express its sincere respect and admiration for Maestro Mr. Ilaiyaraaja and his extraordinary contribution to Indian cinema and music, which has inspired generations and continues to hold a special place in the hearts of audiences across the world. We understand that a particular dialogue appearing in Karuppu has caused concern and has upset him. We sincerely regret that the dialogue has resulted in such sentiments. There was absolutely no intention to offend, hurt, or disrespect Mr. Ilaiyaraaja, his contribution, or his rights in any manner. The reference formed part of a broader satirical context and was not conceived as a personal remark directed at him.”
