Punjab police announced on Friday that they have busted an interstate fake currency operation by arresting two people from Dera Bassi in Mohali district and seizing counterfeit notes worth Rs 9.88 crore.
The seizure also included Rs 11.05 lakh in demonetised currency, according to police.
The accused, Sachin and Gurdeep, are both from Kurukshetra in Haryana. Police also confiscated the white car they were using, said Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav. Preliminary investigations show the accused would put real notes on top of bundles and hide fake notes inside to trick people. They are linked to several cheating and counterfeit cases in Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan.
Technical analysis and further questioning are ongoing to track down others involved. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mohali, Harmandeep, said they received a tip about the movement of two people connected to the fake currency ring. Special teams set up a checkpoint near the PWD Rest House at Ghaggar Bridge on the Old Ambala-Kalka Highway and intercepted the suspects, recovering the fake and demonetised currency.
The investigation has revealed that the accused have cheated many people in Punjab and nearby states and have been involved in previous cases of fraud and fake currency. A case has been registered at Dera Bassi police station, and more arrests and recoveries are expected as the investigation continues.
