The fight for survival is far from over. Greenland 2: Migration, the sequel to the 2020 disaster thriller, is set to premiere on April 24 exclusively on Lionsgate Play, taking audiences deeper into a world reshaped by catastrophe.
Picking up after the devastating comet event that defined the first film, the sequel follows the Garrity family as they step out of the relative safety of Greenland’s underground bunkers and into an unforgiving new reality. Survival is no longer about waiting out the danger. It is about moving forward.
A Journey Through A Broken World
Led by Gerard Butler, alongside Morena Baccarin and Roman Griffin Davis, the film expands both its emotional stakes and narrative scale. The Garritys embark on a perilous migration across
a devastated Europe, navigating extreme climates, limited resources and fractured human systems in search of a new home. Along the way, they encounter new allies and unforeseen threats, forcing them into difficult decisions that test not just their survival instincts but their bond as a family. The sequel aims to balance large-scale spectacle with an intimate exploration of resilience and hope.
‘We Are Stronger Together’: Gerard Butler On The Film’s Core
Reflecting on the film’s themes, Gerard Butler spoke about the importance of unity in times of crisis.
“In terms of the idea, that we are stronger in numbers and as a team; and the more we stick together in these times. Like if we look at the world now as we are coming out of COVID which may be in some ways this represents people coming out of COVID in a world that was way more tricky than it was a few years ago. With a lot more going on that we have to shuffle through and fight through. Just the idea of that hope, hanging out to hope and being able to cling on. And to not deal with things in isolation and to come together as much as we can.”
He further added, “And as John and Alison did in the first movie, seeing past their squabbles and all their issues with each other; they realised in terms of the larger meaning of this world it meant nothing. I hope that it’s part of this legacy and perhaps in realizing that this world is maybe more vulnerable than we think it is and we have to take care of it. Perhaps it’s an insight into a view of another reality that we are lucky not to have had yet and we still have to put in a lot of work into, to make sure we avoid.”
Beyond Disaster, A Story About Hope
Directed by Ric Roman Waugh, Greenland 2: Migration moves beyond conventional disaster storytelling to focus on what comes after. The world has not ended, it has evolved into something harsher and more unpredictable.
As the Garrity family journeys through this new landscape, the film explores not only how to survive but what is still worth holding on to. It is a narrative driven as much by emotional endurance as by physical danger.
