India’s tour of Sri Lanka in August will remain a two-Test series, with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) turning down a proposal to include three additional T20 Internationals in the itinerary.
Earlier this year, SLC had approached the BCCI with a request to expand the tour by including a short T20I leg, aimed at raising funds for relief and reconstruction efforts following Cyclone Ditwah. The Sri Lankan board was optimistic that India’s participation would attract strong fan turnout and generate significant revenue, given the team’s popularity in the island nation.
The proposal was discussed at multiple levels, especially after a potential window of nearly two weeks emerged between the conclusion of the Test series and India’s
next international assignment.
However, according to a report in Sportstar, the BCCI has conveyed that accommodating additional matches would not be feasible due to a packed international calendar.
Scheduling constraints, workload management concerns, and existing bilateral and ICC commitments were key factors behind the decision.
The report further stated that during recent interactions between officials of the two boards, the BCCI expressed its inability to proceed with the proposal at this stage, while acknowledging the intent behind SLC’s initiative.
The Indian board has, however, left the door open for similar collaborations in the future if a suitable window becomes available in an increasingly congested cricket calendar.
As things stand, the tour will go ahead as originally planned, comprising only two Tests, with the opening match scheduled to begin on August 15. While the addition of T20Is could have boosted fan engagement and supported SLC’s fundraising efforts, both boards appear to have accepted the practical limitations posed by scheduling realities.
