A total of 170 Indian students were deported from the United Kingdom in the past five years, which is the highest among all countries. The information was shared in Parliament on Thursday by Minister of State
for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh.
Australia deported 114 Indian students during the same period, followed by Russia with 82 cases and the United States with 45 cases. In addition, 62 Indian students were denied entry into the US at the airport itself.
Other countries that deported Indian students include Georgia (17), Ukraine (13), Finland (5), China (4), Egypt (2) and Austria (1).
Why Students Were Sent Back
According to the government, most deportations took place because of violations of visa and academic rules. Some common reasons mentioned were:
- Taking up jobs that are not allowed under student visas
- Carrying out unauthorised business activities
- Not paying university fees
- Low attendance in classes
- Withdrawing from the registered course or university
- Not showing proof of financial ability to support studies
In several cases, students were turned back because they did not have complete admission documents, had not finished formal enrolment procedures or could not answer basic questions about their chosen course when questioned by immigration officers.

Global Policy Changes Affecting Students
The data comes at a time when major study destinations are tightening their immigration rules. Recently, Australia increased its student visa fee from AUD 1,600 to AUD 2,000 from July 1, 2025, making the visa among the most expensive in the world. The country has also introduced stricter screening of applications and closer monitoring of students shifting between multiple courses.
With a rising number of Indian students moving abroad every year, the government has urged applicants to follow all visa rules and university requirements carefully to avoid deportation or entry denial.
