A promotional poster for an upcoming Tamil film has sparked a conversation online, with one actor questioning why a key cast member was left out of the credits despite being prominently featured in the campaign.
The discussion began after the makers of Vishwanath and Sons unveiled Pattampoochi, the first song from the film’s soundtrack. The poster accompanying the release featured lead actors Suriya and Mamitha Baiju. However, while the names of Suriya, composer GV Prakash Kumar, director Venky Atluri and producers Naga Vamsi and Sai Soujanya appeared on the artwork, Mamitha’s name was missing.
Actor Sanam Shetty drew attention to the issue on X. Reposting Mamitha’s announcement about the song, Sanam questioned why the lead actress had not been
credited on the promotional material.
She wrote, “What is stopping the makers to mention Lead Heroine’s name on the poster? All other main names are mentioned except hers! This is unfair and high time we change this trend! @_mamithabaiju has earned her name that’s why she is cast in such a big film! But even if she was a newbie the heroine rightfully deserves to get equal credits everywhere. Cinema Industry needs to evolve…one change at a time!”
Her post soon triggered further debate online. One social media user asked why she was raising the issue in connection with a Suriya film when similar practices have existed across the industry for years.
Responding to the criticism, Sanam clarified that her remarks were aimed at a larger industry-wide pattern rather than any individual film or actor.
“Someone has to question at some point! We can’t change the past but I hope to see a positive change in our film culture going forward! This is definitely not a clash of JN vs VAS !” she wrote.
She further added, “I have met @Suriya_offl sir and I have immense respect for him as an actor and as a socially responsible human. My question has nothing to do with him personally… And I’m not being partial to @actorvijay sir either …although I’m his fan. I’m asking everyone and the industry as a whole. This is a general Film culture which we have normalised/overlooked for so long …not just in Tamil or Telugu Cinema… but nationwide!”
Explaining her stance, Sanam concluded, “My point is simple. If the heroine is important in the script and if her presence is used to promote the film then she deserves to get mentioned in posters! Whether she has market value or not is irrelevant for poster credits! Cinema evolves with us. It’s all about equality and respect.”
The makers of Vishwanath and Sons have not issued any response to the matter so far.
Directed by Venky Atluri, the film centres on Sanjay Vishwanath, played by Suriya, a pistol-shooting champion in his 40s who is attempting to revive his career. Mamitha Baiju stars as Maddy, a spirited woman in her 20s who enters his life and initially sees him as a mentor.
The story takes an unexpected turn when Maddy develops romantic feelings for Sanjay. While she insists that their 20-year age difference is not a concern, he remains uncomfortable with the idea. In the teaser, Sanjay tells her, “At the snap of your fingers, many boys in your age group will come running after you.”
Maddy replies, “I can snap many more times; why don’t you fall for me? That’s what I want.”
The teaser concludes with Sanjay carrying a toddler, hinting at another layer to the story.
Vishwanath and Sons is backed by producers Suryadevara Naga Vamsi and Sai Soujanya under the banners Sithara Entertainments and Fortune Four Cinemas, with Srikara Studios presenting the project. The film is scheduled to hit theatres on August 14.
