Stand-up comedian Pranit More issued a public apology following the backlash over the viral “Rs 370 biryani” controversy, admitting that he made a serious error in judgment by allowing offensive remarks to continue during one of his crowd-work sessions.
The controversy began after a video from More’s show gained traction online. During the interaction, audience member Himanshu Jangra recounted a dating experience and suggested that because he had spent Rs 370 on a plate of chicken biryani during a date, he expected something in return from the woman.
The remarks quickly sparked outrage across social media platforms, with many users criticising them as misogynistic, transactional and indicative of problematic attitudes that still influence contemporary
dating culture.
As criticism mounted, More addressed the issue in a video statement on Saturday, acknowledging his role in amplifying the comments and expressing regret over how the situation unfolded.
Explaining his silence until now, the comedian said that his Instagram account had been suspended, preventing him from responding earlier. He admitted that while interacting with the audience member during the crowd-work segment, several derogatory comments were made, but the atmosphere in the room, where people were laughing, influenced his reaction.
“This is something I wanted to say for a long time, but my Instagram was suspended. Many of you might have seen my crowd work video, for which I have been receiving a lot of hate. I feel I deserve this hate. Because while I was doing crowd work with that guy, he said many derogatory things, but everyone was laughing. I got carried away, and it was a lapse in judgment,” More said.
The comedian further acknowledged that he could have intervened and stopped the conversation but failed to do so.
“I feel this was a big mistake on my part. I could have stopped him there or taken a stand, but I didn’t. I gave him a platform, which caused things to escalate. To anyone who was hurt because of this, I want to apologise,” he added.
More also stated that he is cooperating with authorities regarding any legal proceedings connected to the controversy. He appealed to the public for an opportunity to learn from the incident and improve both personally and professionally.
“Whatever legal proceedings are happening against me, I am cooperating with the authorities. I only request all of you to please give me a chance. I will become a better person. This was a learning experience for me. I am working on myself, I will work on my content, and you will be able to see this in my work in the future,” he said.
His apology post soon drew significant engagement online, with users offering a mix of support, criticism and humour.
“Bhai Indian Comedy World Hai Haste Sab Hai aur End Me Rota Ek Hi Insaan Hai 😍 Aage Badho Kuchh Din Me SAB Bhul Jayenge,” wrote one user in support of the comedian.
Another commented, “It’s ok life always have ups n downs. Be strong.. be wise what you show to nation in ur shows… life goes on… Have a great comeback 🔥”.
Some users responded with humour, with one writing, “Samay 2.0 😂”, while another bluntly remarked, “Galti to hai tumhari bhi.”
Others felt the apology came too late. “I’m glad you realized your mistake, but I wish you had realized it when it could’ve actually made a difference,” read one comment.
Several followers continued to back the comedian despite the controversy. “Koi nhi bhai ..we support you but aagese bs care Krna baki galti to insaan se he hoti hai,” wrote one supporter.
Another user summed up the situation humorously, saying, “Ek 370 ki biriani ne life lesson de diya🥲”.
Meanwhile, one fan offered words of encouragement, commenting, “People laugh at your jokes in the beginning, but later they turn against you. Don’t worry, you’ll always be my favorite comedian.🤎”
