For the first time in cricket history, two players took a hat-trick in the same bilateral men’s T20I series between full-member nations on Thursday. West Indies’ Shamar Springer helped script the record with his first-ever hat-trick in the third T20I against Afghanistan at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, after Afghan spinner Mujeeb ur Rahman had picked up his hat-trick in the previous match.
In a series they had already lost 2-0, West Indies batted first and scored 151/7 on Thursday. In the second innings, Afghanistan were 127/4 when Springer began the 19th over. He got the wickets of Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Rashid Khan, and Shahidullah Kamal on consecutive deliveries to reduce the opposition to 127/7. He ended with excellent figures of 4/20
as the West Indies took a consolatory 15-run win.

Springer became only the third West Indies player with a T20I hat-trick after Jason Holder and Romario Shepherd.
“It feels great, being the third West Indian to take a hat-trick in T20 cricket is really special,” he said after the match. “I was just patient. I just wanted to give my best when I got out there… It was just trying to make the guys hit to the bigger side of the ground and to really focus on my execution as best as possible.”
Mujeeb, on the other hand, had taken his hat-trick across two overs. In the second innings of the second T20I, he got the wickets of Evin Lewis and Johnson Charles on consecutive balls, before getting rid of Brandon King on the first ball of his next over, the 16th of the match.
Previously, there has only been one instance of two players taking hat-tricks in the same T20I series — Sheraz Sheikh and Waseem Abbas for Malta and Belgium, which are not full-member nations. Some ICC events have also seen multiple hat-tricks, with Australia star Pat Cummins’ triple wickets against Afghanistan and Bangladesh in back-to-back games in the 2024 T20 World Cup the most recent.
