Nearly two years after last playing an international game, Sarfaraz Khan is elated to have been recalled to the India Test squad for the upcoming Sri Lanka series. The middle-order batter made his India debut in 2024 and played all six of his Tests that year, scoring 371 runs at an average of 37.10, including one century and three half-centuries.
He was picked in India’s squad for the 2024-25 Australia tour but did not get a game and was subsequently left out of the squad for the 2025 England tour.
Having lost his spot in the team, Sarfaraz continued to pummel bowlers for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy and finished as his team’s third-highest run-getter of the 2025 season, scoring 429 runs at an average of 53.62.

Sudharsan opened up a spot in the squad, with the selectors calling up Sarfaraz as his replacement.
Soon after the announcement, the 28-year-old took to social media to celebrate his comeback, sharing a couple of pictures in an India jersey while posing alongside his father.
He will join the India Test squad, led by Shubman Gill, ahead of the first Test against Sri Lanka, which starts on August 15 in Galle.
The two-match tour is part of the ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 cycle and is crucial to India’s hopes of qualifying for the final. The top two teams at the end of the cycle will contest for the title.
India are currently fifth on the table after winning four Tests, losing four and drawing one.
The Shubman Gill-led squad geared up for what is expected to be a challenging tour by taking part in a three-day practice match, which they won by six wickets on Sunday.
The team has been hit by a spate of injuries, with the likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Sudharsan, Nitish Reddy, Washington Sundar and Harshit Rana not part of the tour as they recover from various fitness issues.
