New Delhi, Jun 30 (PTI) Delhi Metro Rail Corporation on Tuesday opened an interpretation centre at Patel Chowk station to create awareness about the ecological importance of the Delhi Ridge.
The Delhi Ridge Interpretation Centre has been set up to showcase the unique ecological features of the Delhi Ridge, often referred to as Delhi’s “green lungs”, and has been established in compliance with directions of the Supreme Court following recommendations of the Central Empowered Committee (CEC), the DMRC said in a statement.
The centre also aims to educate people about its role in maintaining the city’s environmental balance.
The facility was inaugurated in the presence of Chandra Prakash Goyal, Chairman of the Central Empowered Committee under the Union
Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, P Vishwakannan, Chief Conservator of Forests, Department of Forests and Wildlife, Delhi government and Vikas Kumar, Managing Director of the DMRC.
Speaking at the inauguration, Goyal said the interpretation centre would serve as an important destination for people interested in understanding the history, heritage and ecology of the Delhi Ridge.
He said the Ridge was expected to witness further conservation and development efforts in the coming years, which could also be reflected in the centre’s exhibits.
He said the facility would help generate greater public awareness about the conservation of the ecologically sensitive Ridge.
According to the DMRC, the centre has been designed to educate visitors about the Ridge’s biodiversity and its contribution to Delhi’s environmental health through a series of information panels and exhibits.
The interpretation centre will remain open from Tuesday to Sunday between 10 am and 4 pm and will remain closed on Monday and public holidays, it said.
Visitors who are not travelling by Metro can buy an entry ticket for Rs 11 at the customer care centre at Patel Chowk Metro station. The DMRC said group bookings and additional information would be available through the designated email contact and on its official website.
The corporation said the initiative was part of its continued efforts to promote environmental awareness and conservation alongside public transport services. PTI SHB APL
