Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached Johannesburg on Friday, beginning his three-day visit to South Africa for this year’s G20 Summit. His arrival marks an important moment, as the gathering is being held on African soil for the first time — a point he described as a “significant milestone” before his departure from India.
This year’s summit carries the theme ‘Solidarity, Equality and Sustainability’ and continues the recent trend of the G20 being hosted in the Global South for the fourth year in a row.
Focus Areas Of The Summit
During his visit, the Prime Minister is expected to address all three main sessions of the summit. These discussions will centre on inclusive economic growth, global climate challenges, and the fast-changing landscape of artificial intelligence — including both its opportunities and its risks.
The Ministry of External Affairs has said that PM Modi will present India’s views on each of these key areas, highlighting the country’s priorities and expectations from the global forum.
Bilateral Meetings And IBSA Engagement
Alongside the main G20 events, PM Modi is scheduled to hold several bilateral meetings with world leaders. He will also take part in the India-Brazil-South Africa (IBSA) Leaders’ Meeting, which will be hosted by Pretoria during the summit.
The visit is expected to strengthen India’s engagement with African nations and deepen partnerships within the Global South.
