Ghaziabad Sisters Used Korean Names On Social Media, Father Deleted Account Days Before Suicide

The deaths of three minor sisters in Ghaziabad have now drawn attention to family stress, confiscated mobile phones and the girls’ intense fascination with Korean popular culture.

Police findings in the case had earlier too pointed to prolonged online gaming addiction and the psychological vulnerability of adolescents.

The sisters, aged 16, 14, and 12, died after jumping from the balcony of their ninth-floor apartment in Sahibabad in the early hours of Wednesday.

Police said they were rushed to a nearby hospital in Loni but were declared dead on arrival.

The girls had allegedly been distressed after their father sold their mobile phones to pay household bills amid debts of about Rs 2 crore.

It was also known

that the father, Chetan Kumar, had warned the children and objected to their online activities.

Multiple media reports now suggest that the sisters had created a social-media account which had gained followers and that they used Korean-sounding names, Maria, Aliza and Cindy, to identify themselves online.

Investigators were also quoted as saying that the father had discovered the girls’ online account roughly 10 days before their deaths, deleted it and confiscated their phones.

The reports mentioned that since the girls were “obsessed with Korean culture”, they were upset at being unable to watch Korean dramas after losing access to their phones.

India Today cited police sources describing a multi-page handwritten note recovered from the apartment.

The publication said the diary, which carried repeated apologies to the father, conveyed that the sisters felt misunderstood about their interests and personal choices.

“We loved Korean pop music very deeply. We’re sorry. You may not have understood how much it meant to us, but it was a huge part of our lives,” the note read.

“At times, it felt like that world mattered more to us than anything else around us,” it mentioned.

Another passage, according to the report, read, “The thought of marrying an Indian and not a Korean brought us stress and confusion. We’re sorry, Papa.”

POLICE LINK CASE TO KOREAN TASK-BASED GAME, ADDICTION

According to news agency PTI, police believe the sisters had become addicted to a Korean task-based interactive “love game” that involved a series of challenges.

Officers recovered a suicide note bearing the lines, “Read everything written in this diary, it is all here,” followed by a crying-face emoji and the words “Sorry papa, I am really sorry.”

Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police Rajeev Krishna told reporters, “We are getting the whole case examined in detail,” as he stressed the need for cyber-awareness programmes.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Nimish Patil said preliminary investigation showed the girls were influenced by Korean content and spent long hours on their phones, adding that their education had been irregular and their academic performance below par.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Atul Kumar Singh said the parents had restricted phone use in recent days, which left the sisters distressed and “may have triggered the decision (to take the extreme step).”

The father told reporters that the girls had been playing the game for nearly three years and had stopped attending school after academic setbacks, making them increasingly withdrawn.

“If I had known that such tasks existed, no father would ever allow his children to be part of it,” he said.

Police said the investigation remains ongoing, with forensic examinations of the seized phones expected to shed further light on the circumstances that led to the tragedy.
