Indian Railways (IR) has achieved a significant milestone in the current financial year (FY 2025–26), surpassing the one-billion-tonne mark in cumulative freight movement. As of November 19, the national
transporter recorded a total loading of approximately 1,020 million tonnes (MT), demonstrating robust operational efficiency and sustained momentum driven by strong economic activity across key sectors. This achievement comes notably earlier in the fiscal year than previous records, underscoring the Railways’ increasing capacity to support India’s industrial and infrastructure expansion.
The success reflects broad-based support from core sectors of the economy. Coal remains the largest single contributor, accounting for nearly half of the total volume at around 505 MT. Other major commodities demonstrating high demand and efficient transport include iron ore (115 MT), cement (92 MT), and container traffic (59 MT), with significant contributions also coming from finished steel, fertilisers, and foodgrains. The consistent daily loading rate, which has increased to approximately 4.4 MT compared to 4.2 MT in the corresponding period last year, highlights improved utilisation of rolling stock and reduced turnaround times.
This remarkable growth is not accidental but is a direct result of comprehensive policy reforms and strategic infrastructural investment. A key area of intervention is the cement logistics segment, critical for India’s infrastructure push. The Ministry of Railways has rolled out reforms such as the Policy for Bulk Cement Terminals and rationalised rates for bulk cement movement in containers. These measures are designed to modernise cement transportation, increase bulk handling capacity, reduce transit time, and ultimately lower logistics costs for the industry and consumers alike.
Beyond the commercial metrics, this shift of bulk goods to rail aligns Indian Railways with the nation’s commitment to sustainable growth and Net Zero Carbon Emission targets. By effectively taking cargo off congested highways, rail transport significantly reduces the overall carbon footprint of freight movement, providing industries, including MSMEs, with access to a greener and more cost-efficient logistics solution. This milestone solidifies the Indian Railways’ position as a powerful catalyst for both economic and environmental progress.
