Some of Hollywood’s greatest thrillers, from pulse-pounding survival sagas to psychological mind games, are now streaming on Netflix and Prime Video. Hailed by top critics for their gripping narratives and masterful performances, these films promise to keep you on the edge of your seat. Here are five must-watch Hollywood thrillers available on Netflix and Prime Video.
Bird Box
Based on the 2014 novel, Bird Box follows Sandra Bullock’s character, Malorie Hayes, as she navigates a society where invisible forces are responsible for mass suicides. As Malorie guides two children along a river while wearing blindfolds, flashbacks show her early struggles and encounters with both allies and strangers, such as Olympia (Danielle Macdonald) and Tom (Trevante
Rhodes).
Bird Box, directed by Susanne Bier, was released on December 14, 2018. You can watch Bird Box on Netflix.
The Platform
In The Pit, a vertical prison where food is moved from the highest floors to the lowest, leaving little for the prisoners below, Iván Massagué’s character Goreng awakens. He learns about human existence and greed from his cellmate Trimagasi (Zorion Eguileor).
The “minimalist fury” of the movie reminded Variety’s Amy Nicholson of Samuel Beckett’s plays. The film is a classic with its gripping tension and potent social critique of injustice.
On September 6, 2019, Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia’s book The Platform was released. You may see it on Netflix right now.
Watcher
Julia, played by Maika Monroe, moves to Bucharest with her husband, Francis (Karl Glusman). When she learns that young ladies are the target of a serial killer, her paranoia grows. Loneliness and distrust in a new city are highlighted by Watcher.
Watcher is “one of this century’s most arresting tales of female anxiety,” according to Lena Wilson of The New York Times. On June 3, 2022, the film, directed by Chloe Okuno, was released. You can stream Watcher on Prime Video.
You Were Never Really Here
Joe, portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix, is a war veteran with PTSD who protects women from the sex trade. When a routine mission goes wrong, he finds himself in danger. In the end, the video highlights the human cost of both violence and rescue efforts.
On April 6, 2018, Lynne Ramsay’s film You Were Never Really Here was released in theatres. Guy Lodge of Variety called the film an “astonishing” and “slashed-to-the-bone hitman thriller,” and he commended Ramsay’s direction. Prime Video has You Were Never Really Here.
10 Cloverfield Lane
Michelle (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) awakens in a bunker after a car accident and learns that the outside world has been poisoned. Her prisoner, Howard (John Goodman), insists she stay inside with him and Emmett (John Gallagher Jr.).
In his review, Jeannette Catsoulis of The New York Times commended the film’s approach to “fears of terrorism.” The psychological thriller 10 Cloverfield Lane is distinguished by its succinct yet straightforward idea.
On March 11, 2016, Dan Trachtenberg’s film 10 Cloverfield Lane was released. You can watch the movie on Prime Video.
