Arsenal forward Gabriel Martinelli came off the bench in the second half of Brazil’s 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 32 match against Japan in Houston on Monday (June 29) and scored the winning goal for the five-time champions in the fifth minute of stoppage time (90+5′). The strike not only helped Brazil secure a hard-fought 2-1 comeback victory over Japan in their first knockout match of this year’s FIFA World Cup, but also earned Martinelli a place in the record books.
Martinelli’s goal in the 90+5th minute is the latest winning goal scored in normal time in the knockout stages of FIFA World Cup history.

Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimarães provided the assist for Martinelli’s winner after Casemiro had equalised with a header in the 56th minute. Japan had taken a shock lead in the 29th minute before the veteran midfielder restored parity for Brazil.
Casemiro’s goal also saw him enter the record books.
The defensive midfielder, who is set to join Inter Miami, became the second-oldest player to score a goal for Brazil in a FIFA World Cup match. The former Real Madrid and Manchester United star scored Brazil’s opening goal against Japan at the age of 34 years and 126 days.
The record for the oldest player to score a goal for Brazil in a FIFA World Cup match is held by Bebeto. He was 34 years and 137 days old when he found the net against Denmark in the quarter-finals of the 1998 FIFA World Cup in Nantes on July 3.
The overall record for the oldest goal-scorer in FIFA World Cup history belongs to Cameroon’s Roger Milla. He was 42 years and 39 days old when he scored against Russia at the 1994 FIFA World Cup.
Brazil to face Norway or Ivory Coast
In the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Brazil will face the winner of the Round of 32 match between Norway and Ivory Coast. Brazil’s Round of 16 fixture is scheduled to be played at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford on Sunday (July 5).
If Brazil win that match as well, they could face England in the quarter-finals and Argentina in the semi-finals.
