Tom Hiddleston is fueling anticipation for Avengers: Doomsday, describing the upcoming Marvel blockbuster as a cinematic event unlike anything audiences have seen before. The actor, who has portrayed Loki
in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for over a decade, recently spoke to the UK edition of GQ, where he praised the film’s ambitious storytelling.
Calling the movie “monumental,” Hiddleston shared how deeply impressed he was upon first reading the script. “The center of the story is absolutely brilliant, and was so surprising when I read it,” he told the magazine. “It just has never been done before.”
Hiddleston’s comments arrive as Marvel continues to roll out teasers for Avengers: Doomsday, heightening excitement around the next phase of the MCU and the return of several fan-favourite characters.
Where Loki’s story last left off
The last time audiences saw Hiddleston’s Loki was in Season 2 of the Disney+ series Loki, which concluded in November 2023 and has not yet been renewed. Reflecting on the character’s journey, Hiddleston explained how Loki’s evolution required confronting his past actions.
“In order to become someone different, whose story had a different ending, he had to make peace with the things he did,” he told GQ. “It gave him the power of authorship over his own story.”
The actor’s remarks suggest that Loki’s arc has reached a pivotal point, one that could play a significant role in the events of Avengers: Doomsday, even as Marvel remains tight-lipped about how his character factors into the larger narrative.
Thor’s return and the rise of Doctor Doom
The interview coincides with the release of the second Avengers: Doomsday teaser, which features Chris Hemsworth reprising his role as Thor. The teaser, which first screened in theaters alongside Avatar: Fire and Ash before appearing online, shows the God of Thunder delivering a haunting prayer ahead of an impending battle.
The footage also confirms the return of Hemsworth’s real-life daughter, India Rose, as Thor’s adopted child Love, last seen in Thor: Love and Thunder (2022). In the teaser, Thor says, “Father, all my life I’ve answered every call, to honor, duty, to war. But now fate has given me something I never sought: a child, a life untouched by the storm. Lend me the strength of the All Fathers so that I may fight once more, defeat one more enemy, and return home to her — and not as a warrior but as warmth, to teach her not battle but stillness, the kind I never knew.”
Adding to the film’s scale, Robert Downey Jr. is set to return to the MCU not as Iron Man, but as Victor Von Doom, also known as Doctor Doom, positioning him as a Thanos-level threat.
Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to release in theaters on December 18, 2026, with its story continuing in Avengers: Secret Wars, slated for December 17, 2027.
