If there’s one global news that has everyone talking, then it is, of course, the ongoing war between the US and Iran. Going on for weeks now, the dispute has started to impact Hollywood primarily through economic disruption, production logistics and long-term industry strategy. Let’s try to understand how Hollywood films are suffering because of the global tension.
Rise In Production Cost Due To Fuel Price Hike
One of the most immediate effects of the war has been rising fuel costs. As oil prices surge past $100–$110 per barrel due to instability in the Strait of Hormuz, production expenses have increased. It should be noted that film shoots depend heavily on fuel, which is used for various purposes – transport, generators and on-location logistics. Even props, costumes and cameras travel
by truck, ship and plane. Due to the increase in fuel prices, the transportation cost for all these items has/is likely to go up in the coming weeks. Reportedly, fuel typically accounts for around 0.5 per cent of a production budget. This means that the recent spike will push overall costs higher.
Disruptions In International Filming
It was recently announced that the Dubai shoot schedule of Shah Rukh Khan’s King has been cancelled due to the tensions between the US and Iran. Bollywood is not the only film industry that has been suffering; Hollywood is no different. Reportedly, studios are facing logistical challenges due to restricted airspace in parts of the Middle East. International shoots, especially those requiring travel between Europe and Asia, have been delayed. An Israeli TV producer recently told The Hollywood Reporter, “We just keep filming in between the (air raid) sirens.”
Impact On Release Strategies
Any delay in a project’s shoot will most likely push its release too. This means that if a film is delayed due to the ongoing US-Iran war, it might miss its planned release date. Besides this, studios might also reconsider theatrical releases in such volatile international markets and might lean more on digital platforms to ensure a stable release. A UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles) film historian, while speaking to Vanity Fair, also noted that “wars reshape markets,” highlighting how economic shocks influence a production house’s decisions and output.
Film Festivals, Concerts Postponed
Several film festivals and global concerts have also been postponed due to the ongoing war. The 12th edition of the Saudi Film Festival, which was scheduled to take place from April 23 to 29, has been postponed to June 25 to July 1. Besides this, Shakira’s India tour, Kanye West’s Delhi concert and the Off Limits festival in Abu Dhabi have also been postponed for now.
