India’s T20I captain Shreyas Iyer entered his name in the record books on Thursday (July 23) by becoming the first player in the world to win the toss in each of his first eight T20I matches as captain.

The 31-year-old cricketer from Mumbai, who replaced Suryakumar Yadav as India’s T20I captain on June 6, 2026, is leading India for the eighth time in the format on Thursday against Zimbabwe in Harare. After winning the toss, he opted to field first. Iyer had also won the toss in each of his previous seven T20Is as India’s captain as well.

Iyer is the first player in the world to win the toss in each of his first eight matches as captain in men’s T20Is. He
broke the record held by Gregory Taylor of the Bahamas, who had won the toss in each of his first seven T20Is as captain.

By winning the toss in each of his first eight international matches as India’s captain, Iyer has also equalled an 88-year-old record. He is only the second men’s international captain to win the toss in each of his first eight matches, after England’s Wally Hammond.

Iyer breaks Dhoni’s record
Iyer is also the first India captain to win eight consecutive tosses in T20Is. The previous record for the most consecutive toss wins by an India captain in T20Is was held by Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Dhoni had won seven tosses in a row as India’s T20I captain between May 2010 and February 2012.
The world record for the most consecutive toss wins in T20Is among Full Member teams is held by former West Indies all-rounder Daren Sammy, who won 10 tosses in a row.
