RJ Balaji recently opened up about the journey behind Karuppu and revealed why Tamil Nadu CM Thalapathy Vijay holds a special place in his heart. During a recent interaction, the filmmaker spoke about how Vijay indirectly played a key role in helping him take his story to actor Suriya, eventually contributing to the path that led to the project’s progress.
In an interaction with Cineulagam, the director said, “I got access to Suriya sir because Thalapathy Vijay sir listened to this story. Suriya sir is a big superstar; you cannot randomly narrate a story to him. When Dream Warrior Pictures called, they asked, ‘Can you narrate the story to Suriya sir that you narrated to Thalapathy Vijay sir?’ So, somewhere, he’s in a special place in my heart,
even though we didn’t do a film together.”
He further added, “Whatever my life is today is because of Suriya sir. But the first door was opened by Vijay sir. So, that meeting with him was very special. He even told my wife how good the script was.”
Recently, Dream Warrior Pictures announced that Karuppu had crossed ₹340 crore in worldwide gross collections. Celebrating the achievement, the banner wrote on Instagram, “The roaring divine blockbuster of the year (blast emoji) #Karuppu enters its unbeatable 5th week with 340+ CRORES WORLDWIDE GROSS!”
The film’s performance marks a significant milestone for Suriya, making Karuppu the highest-grossing film of his career so far. The success is particularly notable following the underwhelming theatrical performances of his previous releases Kanguva and Retro.
Directed by RJ Balaji, Karuppu recently began streaming on Amazon Prime Video from June 12. The film is available in Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam and Hindi, while the Telugu version has been released under the title Veerabhadrudu.
The story follows Karuppusamy, a guardian deity portrayed by Suriya, who assumes human form after being challenged by a corrupt lawyer named Baby Kannan, played by RJ Balaji. Trisha stars as lawyer Preethi, who joins forces with him in a fight to prove that justice can prevail through lawful means.
The film concludes by hinting at a larger battle ahead, teasing a potential sequel in which the deity takes on Parliament after confronting the judiciary. However, the makers have not yet officially announced a follow-up project.
