New Delhi, Jul 29 (PTI) The NHRC on Wednesday said it has issued notice to the Assam government and police authorities over reports that four workers died and two others were severely injured in an explosion at a metal processing factory in the Cachar district.
Reportedly, molten metal spilled on the workers after the explosion. The families of the victims and locals alleged that such incidents had happened at the factory earlier also, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) said in a statement.
The NHRC has taken suo motu cognisance of a media report that on July 26, four workers died and two others were severely injured in an explosion at a metal processing factory in the Cachar district of Assam, it said.
The commission observed that the
content of the media report, if true, raises serious issues of violation of human rights.
Accordingly, it issued notices to the Assam government’s chief secretary and the superintendent of police of Cachar, seeking a detailed report on it in two weeks. The report is expected to include the status of the health of the injured, as well as the disbursement of compensation to the next of kin of the deceased and to the injured workers, it said.
According to the media report, carried on July 27, more than 100 workers were present at the factory when the explosion happened, the right panel said.
In a separate statement, the NHRC said it has taken suo motu cognisance of a media report that on July 26, a sanitation worker and a security guard died allegedly after inhaling toxic gases inside a sewage treatment plant at a residential society in Noida, Gautam Budh Nagar in Uttar Pradesh.
Reportedly, the sanitation worker entered the sewage treatment plant to clean a tank and lost consciousness. When the worker did not come out, a security guard from the residential society entered the tank to rescue him but he also lost consciousness, it said.
The NHRC issued notices to the district magistrate and the police commissioner of Gautam Budh Nagar, seeking a detailed report on it in two weeks. The report is expected to include the status of the investigation, as well as compensation, if any, paid to the next of kin of the victims, the statement said.
According to the media report, carried on July 27, both victims were pulled out by the police and fire brigade personnel and taken to the hospital, where they were declared dead during the course of treatment.
In a separate statement, the NHRC took suo motu cognisance of a media report that a five-year-old boy studying in a private school was allegedly subjected to torture and inhuman treatment by his teacher in the Varanasi district of Uttar Pradesh.
The teacher, enraged after the boy urinated in his pants, reportedly took him to the school kitchen and “branded his private parts with a hot knife,” it said.
The commission issued notices to the Uttar Pradesh government’s chief secretary and the Varanasi police commissioner, seeking a detailed report on it in two weeks.
According to the media report, carried on July 28, the boy informed his parents about the incident after returning home. Reportedly, the teacher threatened him with more severe punishment if he repeated it, the rights panel said. PTI KND MNK MNK
