A host of film sequels and threequels are lined up for release in 2026. 29 years after JP Dutta’s Border, Sunny Deol will be back on the screen with its spiritual sequel. Drishyam 3, the shoot of which is currently underway, is also set for a release next year. Joining the list is now The Kerala Story 2. Its prequel, The Kerala Story, directed by Sudipto Sen and starring Adah Sharma had hit the screens in 2023. It revolved around a group of women from Kerala who were coerced into converting to Islam and joining the Islamic State.
News18 Showsha has now exclusively learnt that its sequel, also set in Kerala, has already been shot. Reportedly, it will portray a grimer and darker narrative. Details about the cast and the director of The Kerala Story
2 is still kept under wraps. An independent source from the industry told us, “The Kerala Story 2 is filmed already in an extremely controlled and secured manner. Producer Vipul Amrutlal Shah did not want any troubles to erupt during the shoot schedule.”
We heart that the set functioned under tight security, with strict confidentiality protocols and a no-phone policy enforced to protect the film’s content. “The cast and crew reportedly had no access to their phones during the shoot, so nothing could leak from the sets,” said the source. The source further revealed that as per an exhibitor, the release date of the film has been locked as February 27, 2026.
On a related note, The Kerala Story despite being mired in controversies and facing protracted litigation and protests in certain Indian states earned recognition at the 71st National Film Awards. It won two awards in the Best Direction and Best Cinematography categories. Speaking exclusively to us post its big win, Vipul had said, “It was a very tough competition. There were so many great films. It’s the National Award and so, we couldn’t really say that it was our right to win it. We just hoped that the jury saw our work in that light. And I’m very glad that they recognised the film.”
Needless to say, The Kerala Story proved to be a game-changer for Adah. The film opened to more than Rs 8 crores on its first day. Before its second weekend, it crossed the Rs 100 crore-mark and recorded the highest single day number on its second Sunday, beating Salman Khan’s Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan. Its success also made Adah the highest grossing Bollywood actress for a female-led film, beating Alia Bhatt whose Gangubai Kathiawadi previously held the record.
