Nick Jonas has opened up about one of the most emotionally overwhelming chapters of his life — the birth of his daughter, Malti Marie Chopra Jonas. In a deeply moving conversation on the Jay Shetty Podcast, the singer reflected on the traumatic early days following Malti’s arrival, revealing how fragile she was at birth and how the experience reshaped him as a father.
Nick, who shares Malti with wife Priyanka Chopra Jonas, admitted he still feels emotional thinking about that period. Fighting back tears, the Jonas Brothers star said he now feels “awestruck” that he gets “to experience her magic,” especially after witnessing the strength she showed as a newborn.
Nick Jonas Recalls Malti’s Premature And Fragile Birth
Opening up about the circumstances surrounding Malti’s birth, Nick shared details he had
never publicly spoken about before. He revealed that the couple was expecting their daughter to arrive much later than she did.
“She came into the world under very intense circumstances, which I’ve never really talked about. We were expecting her to arrive in April, the year she was born. Then we get a call that it’s going to be sooner… We got to the hospital and came out 1 pound, 11 ounces and purple basically,” Nick said.
He went on to describe how medical staff immediately stepped in to stabilise their daughter, crediting the NICU nurses for their tireless care and quick action. The singer recalled watching Malti being resuscitated and monitored constantly as doctors worked to ensure she survived those critical early hours.
Inside Nick And Priyanka’s 12-Hour Hospital Shifts
Nick also spoke about the months that followed, revealing that both he and Priyanka committed themselves fully to being by their daughter’s side. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, the couple had to carefully coordinate their hospital visits.
“It was Covid-19 time, and so my wife and I basically did 12-hour shifts at the hospital for 3.5 months. I can still smell it; there are always visceral things. It was both comforting and frightening to be there every day and to see other families going through a similar situation,” he shared.
Nick added that Malti showed remarkable resilience during her long stay in the NICU. “She (Malti) fought every day for 3.5 months and slowly started to gain some weight. After six blood transfusions, she was doing great. We got to take her home after 3.5 months,” he said.
Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra married in 2018 in Rajasthan, celebrating their union with both Christian and Hindu wedding ceremonies. The couple welcomed Malti in January 2022.
On the work front, Nick will next be seen alongside Paul Rudd in Power Ballad, directed by John Carney. The film is scheduled for release on June 5 this year.
