At the celebratory dinner hosted by the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre honouring the return of the India Pavilion at the Venice Biennale, Nita Ambani did something she has increasingly become known for on the global stage- using fashion not simply as couture, but as cultural storytelling.
The 61st International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia witnessed a spectacular fusion of Indian heritage and high fashion as the Ambani family inaugurated the National Pavilion of India. On the evening of May 7, the Ambani family hosted an intimate celebration in Venice, Italy, turning heads with a series of looks that perfectly balanced modern silhouettes with traditional Indian opulence.
For the celebratory dinner, Nita Ambani opted for a magnificent
Banarasi brocade Kaduwa saree by Swadesh. Handwoven over five months by master artisans Ashfak Ansari and Habiburrahman, the saree reflected the highest standards of Indian textile artistry. She paired it with a delicately structured gold Chantilly lace blouse featuring a flowy cowl back, designed by Manish Malhotra.
She wore the bespoke Ratna Rivière necklace, which she personally curated using Burmese rubies, Colombian emeralds, and white and yellow diamonds from her private collection. Completing the look was a traditional Indian temple-style hand-carved purse adorned with gold and rubies, adding a distinctive artistic touch.
Every thread, stone, and motif in her appearance paid tribute to the rich craft, culture, and creativity of India. The thoughtful combination of heritage handwoven textiles with contemporary design language created a refined and sophisticated statement — one that seamlessly bridged tradition with modernity.
This appearance perfectly reflected Mrs Ambani’s longstanding patronage of Indian artisans and her role in bringing India’s cultural excellence to international audiences. The choice of a handwoven Banarasi saree, paired with thoughtful details in jewellery and accessories, created a look that was both rooted in tradition and undeniably sophisticated.

Meanwhile, for the same occasion, daughter Isha Ambani wore a custom Chanel Haute Couture sari gown inspired by the fashion house’s iconic Look 72 from its Spring/Summer 1989 collection. Instead of recreating the archival silhouette exactly as it was, the ensemble reinterpreted vintage Chanel through an Indian lens — transforming the structure of couture into the fluid elegance of a sari.
