Carlos Alcaraz will not defend his title at the ABN AMRO Open in Rotterdam, with the tournament confirming his withdrawal via social media on Monday.
The Spaniard, who lifted the ATP 500 trophy last season, has opted to skip the indoor hard-court event scheduled from February 9 to 16, choosing recovery over an immediate return to competition.
Carlos Alcaraz won’t defend his title in Rotterdam. The Australian Open champion concluded that after his exertions over the past two weeks, he needs more time to return to action.
We wish Carlos a swift recovery. 💚#ABNAMROOpen #RotterdamAhoy pic.twitter.com/hHQe6Pyxcm

Alcaraz’s decision comes just a day after he made history at the Australian Open, where the 22-year-old
defeated Novak Djokovic in four sets to claim his maiden Melbourne crown and become the youngest player ever to complete the Career Grand Slam.
Following an exhausting fortnight Down Under — which included marathon battles against Alexander Zverev and Djokovic totalling over eight and a half hours — Alcaraz and his team felt a break was necessary.
The World No.1 has also been managing a lingering leg issue, making rest a priority after a heavy workload.
The withdrawal means Alcaraz will forfeit 500 ATP ranking points from last year’s Rotterdam triumph, where he beat Alex de Minaur 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 to secure his first indoor hard-court title.
However, the points loss is softened by the buffer he built during his Australian Open run, especially after rival Jannik Sinner exited in the semi-finals.
Alcaraz has already had a packed start to 2026, featuring in an exhibition event in South Korea before conquering Melbourne. With bigger targets looming — including Indian Wells and the Italian Open — his team appears focused on long-term gains rather than short-term risk.
Rotterdam will still boast a strong field, with Top 10 stars Alexander Zverev, Felix Auger-Aliassime and Alex de Minaur headlining the draw.
Tournament organisers expressed understanding of Alcaraz’s decision and hope to welcome him back in future editions.
The Spaniard is expected to return to action later this month at the ATP 500 event in Doha.
