Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has turned Mumbai into a major stop on Hollywood’s global map. The Oscar-winning filmmaker is in India with Tom Holland ahead of the film’s grand India premiere, marking the first time a Christopher Nolan film is getting an official premiere in the country.
Videos of Holland arriving in Mumbai and checking into The Taj Mahal Palace quickly went viral, while Nolan reached the city separately with his wife and longtime producing partner, Emma Thomas. Matt Damon, who plays Odysseus in the film, is also expected to be part of the promotional activities.
Nolan Says Coming To India Is Always Special
At the Mumbai event, Nolan spoke warmly about his long association with India and why he had wanted to experience one of
his film launches with Indian audiences.
He said, “Thank you so much for being here. Thank you for welcoming us. It’s always a thrill to be in India. I’ve had the pleasure of filming here twice. Once in Jodhpur, once in Mumbai. Every time we come here, it’s very, very special. For many years, I’ve wanted to come here and launch one of our films and experience it with Indian audiences who are some of the most enthusiastic and knowledgeable cinematic audiences in the world. So it’s such a thrill to be here in this fantastic, complex. Thank you very much for being here.”
His words struck a chord with Indian cinephiles, many of whom have followed Nolan’s films with near-devotional enthusiasm over the years.
Mumbai Joins London, Paris And New York
Universal Pictures International has placed Mumbai alongside London, Paris and New York as part of The Odyssey’s global premiere tour. The India leg is spread across July 10 and July 11. A select media screening is scheduled first, followed by a special industry screening attended by members of the Indian film fraternity.
This is Nolan’s third official visit to India. He previously shot portions of The Dark Knight Rises at Mehrangarh Fort in Jodhpur in 2011. He later returned in 2019 to film key sequences of Tenet in Mumbai.
What Makes The Odyssey A Major Nolan Event
Written and directed by Nolan, The Odyssey adapts Homer’s legendary Greek epic. Matt Damon plays Odysseus, who begins a dangerous journey back to Ithaca after the Trojan War. Anne Hathaway stars as Penelope, while Tom Holland plays Telemachus.
The ensemble also includes Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Lupita Nyong’o and Samantha Morton. Produced by Nolan and Emma Thomas under Syncopy, the film releases worldwide on July 17.
Adding to the excitement, The Odyssey is the first feature film shot entirely using IMAX cameras, made possible through newly developed technology. With premium IMAX tickets in Indian cities reportedly selling out well in advance, Nolan’s India premiere already feels like an event built for the big screen.
