Rohit Sharma continues to feature in India’s ODI plans and is set to play in the upcoming three-match series against England in July. However, despite his continued selection, his long-term future in the format remains uncertain.
Opinions remain divided on whether Rohit, one of India’s finest batters, should be part of India’s plans for next year’s ODI World Cup. The emergence of a new generation of players, coupled with concerns over his age and fitness, has only added to the debate.
Former India captain Dilip Vengsarkar said Rohit has achieved a lot in his career and the decision on how long he wants to continue playing international cricket should rest with him.
The 39-year-old has already retired from Tests and T20Is.
“He (Rohit) has done so
well for India and for himself. It’s up to him. He’s been playing international cricket for the last (almost) 20 years and I’m sure he knows the best (on) how to go about things,” Vengsarkar told news agency PTI.
While Vengsarkar believes the decision should be Rohit’s, former India batter Sanjay Manjrekar has a contrasting view. According to Manjrekar, Rohit should not be part of India’s squad for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Rohit has scored 11,720 runs in 285 ODIs at an average of 48.83, with 33 centuries and 62 half-centuries.
Manjrekar believes the team management should make its decision with Indian cricket’s future in mind rather than focusing on one individual.
“Opening in 50 overs is fun. It is a rehabilitation programme. That, I think, you should give to a player who is in his prime and has got another 5-10 years. If you are thinking only about Rohit Sharma, it’s not right. You have to think about Indian cricket, the future of Indian cricket. In that space, I don’t think Rohit Sharma would be my choice in the (one-day) squad,” Manjrekar told Sony Sports.
Rohit was last seen in action during India’s three-match ODI series against Afghanistan at home, where he scored 143 runs in three innings, including a 69-ball 79.
