Janshakti Janata Dal (JJD) chief Tej Pratap Yadav on Tuesday announced financial assistance of Rs 11 lakh for actor and comedian Rajpal Yadav after learning about the actor’s ongoing financial and legal challenges.
Yadav said he came to know about Rajpal Yadav’s situation through a social media post shared by his elder brother, Rao Inderjeet Yadav.
Expressing solidarity with the actor and his family, the JJD chief said the support was being extended in the spirit of compassion during a difficult phase.
In a post on X, Tej Pratap Yadav said that he and the entire JJD family stood with Rajpal Yadav’s family in empathy and support.
Announcing the assistance, he added that an amount of Rs 11 lakh would be provided to help them cope with the crisis.
The announcement comes amid Rajpal Yadav’s legal troubles linked to multiple cheque-bounce cases. Earlier, the actor surrendered at Tihar Jail after the Delhi High Court declined his plea seeking additional time to repay outstanding dues.
A National School of Drama graduate, Rajpal Yadav is widely known for his performances in popular films such as Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, Phir Hera Pheri, Bhool Bhulaiyaa, Hungama and Chup Chup Ke.
He is currently facing seven cheque-bounce cases involving a total liability of around Rs 9 crore.
The cases relate to a Rs 5-crore loan taken in 2010 from M/s Murali Projects Pvt Ltd to fund his directorial venture Ata Pata Laapata. The film did not perform well commercially, and the loan remained unpaid.
The Delhi High Court had earlier directed the actor to deposit Rs 1.35 crore in each of the seven cases and ordered that the amounts already submitted to the court’s registrar general be released to the complainant.
After Yadav failed to adhere to the payment schedule, the court refused to grant him further relief, leading to his surrender.
Before surrendering, Rajpal Yadav said he lacked the financial resources to clear the dues and remarked that support within the film industry was limited.
“Everyone is on their own,” he said when asked whether colleagues had come forward to help.
Meanwhile, actor Sonu Sood also extended support to Rajpal Yadav, announcing that the actor would feature in his upcoming film and receive a signing amount.
Calling for solidarity within the industry, Sood said the gesture was meant to restore dignity rather than offer charity.
In a post on X, Sood described Rajpal Yadav as a gifted actor who has contributed significantly to Hindi cinema, adding that difficult times often arise due to circumstances rather than lack of talent.
He urged producers, directors and fellow actors to come together and support their colleague.
