Guwahati, Jul 29 (PTI) An Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT) on Wednesday concluded its four-day trip to assess Assam’s flood situation, officials said.
Chief Secretary Ravi Kota debriefed the central team, led by Ramachandrudu, joint secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs, at a meeting here.
“An Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT) reviewed the flood situation and the ongoing relief, rescue and restoration efforts during its visit to the flood-affected districts of Upper Assam,” the chief minister’s office (CMO) said in a post on X.
“As directed by HCM Dr. @himantabiswa, @CSAssam_presented the IMCT with a comprehensive overview of the unprecedented rapid-onset floods that severely impacted Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat and Golaghat districts,”
it said.
The IMCT was apprised of the extensive damage caused by persistent heavy rainfall across Assam and neighbouring states, particularly in the upstream catchments of Nagaland, coupled with exceptionally high localised rainfall.
The team was also briefed on the coordinated response undertaken by SDRF, NDRF, Fire and Emergency Services, the Indian Army, the Indian Air Force and district administrations, as well as the extensive damage to embankments, bridges, roads, houses and agricultural land.
“Discussions also focused on the need for enhanced central support for a district wise reconstruction plan, dedicated assistance for the worst-affected districts of Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat and Golaghat, restoration and strengthening of breached embankments, and adopting Build Back Better principles to restore infrastructure and improve long-term flood resilience,” the CMO added.
At least 75 people have been killed and over 3.32 lakh people remained affected by the floods in Assam this year. PTI SSG SSG ACD
